Vapor intrusion, defined as when chemicals in soil or groundwater contaminate the air we breathe. There are many dangerous chemicals that when inhaled can cause health problems. These are generally classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) There is even a syndrome attributed to poor air quality called “Sick Building Syndrome.” Symptoms of poor indoor air quality include respiratory, allergic, and immune effects.

Vapor intrusion mitigation can reduce and remove dangerous compounds from the air using vacuum pressure and fans to vent the contaminated air out of the indoor live/work locations.

One of the volatile organic compounds that requires vapor intrusion mitigation most frequently is a common chemical used in dry cleaning clothes. Tetrachloroethylene, also commonly referred to as perchloroethylene, or just PERC, is used by three out of four dry cleaners. It is nonflammable and odorless but can wreak havoc on your liver and kidneys.

As a radon abatement contractor, we are experts in reducing odorless gas from indoor spaces. The EPA has stated that radon mitigation systems, including the sub-slab mitigation system that we often utilize is one of the most common solutions to soil vapor intrusion.

“The most common solution is to install systems often used to reduce naturally occurring radon that seeps into homes in some geographic areas. These systems, called radon mitigation systems, remove soil vapors from below basements or foundations before they enter homes.” – EPA’s What You Should Know About Vapor Intrusion Fact Sheet
