Radon Removal: We're Finally Waking Up to This Deadly Health Issue
Ever since Marie Curie discovered the principles of radioactivity, we have been in a deadly grip. All radioactive elements, including radon have what's called a "half life". A half life refers to the fact that a radioactive element decays at a certain rate and then after a certain time, will be reduced by half the original amount.
The problem with radon though is that it has a very short half life of only 3.7 days, giving it less time to decay. There's also another problem: Radon is not trapped in the soil like uranium and radium. It is a gas, which can escape from the soil. Naturally, the gas moves towards the surface and creates negative pressure.
What is negative pressure? Think of it as "empty space". It's like a vacuum, which has a pressure differential between the empty space and occupied space. You may be thinking that there's very little empty space in the soil, but this is not the case. It really is everywhere in the ground. Of course, the nature of the soil dictates the speed that radon gas comes up to the top. Clay and loamy soils are harder for radon gas to move through. Sandy soil is a much easier.
Radon Gas Comes to the Surface
As the radon gas comes to the surface, it gets into our homes and starts reeking havoc on our bodies. Your home is also a negative pressure point in the soil. Not good for radon removal issues.
Throughout the U.S, in every community in every state, there have been radon removal efforts to get rid of the problem in homes. This is a great effort on the part of home owners everywhere. It shows we are finally coming to terms with the major health issues and environmental concerns - air quality, water pollution, the need for organic foods and other important issues - that are all around us.
