Radon Vent Fans Can Help Reduce the Risk
There are certain requirements that must be followed for fan installation, as explained in the following points:
- First, radon mitigation vent fans need to be designed or sealed to limit the potential for leakage of soil gas from the fan housing.
- Radon vent fans need to be fitted to account for the pressure difference and air flow dynamics needed to reach radon reduction objectives.
- For depressurization systems, vent fans cannot be installed below ground or in a basement, the heated or cooled part of a building, crawlspace, or other similar location.
- The best locations for radon vent fans are attics (not lived in), garages (not below conditioned spaces) or on the outside of the building.
- The "configuration" is important. You need to be careful to avoid condensation buildup in the fan housing.
- Exterior vent fans need to be rated for outdoor use or installed in protective housing.
- You need to minimize the transfer of vibration from the framing of the building.
- Radon vent fans should be installed in the vent pipe (use removable couplings and/or flexible connections) for future maintenance and replacement.
Finally, the intakes of fans used in crawlspace pressurization need to be screened or filtered. Be sure to replace or clean these screens and filters periodically.
Make sure the radon vent fans you are using are UV resistant, UL listed durable plastic and have a watertight electrical terminal box. They also need a high efficiency EBM motorized impeller and thermal overload protection.
